Introduced by Eliza Goodpasture
In 1900 – fifty years after Wuthering Heights was first published – a gifted young art student in the circle of Gwen John began compulsively illustrating Emily Brontë’s only novel. Over the next three decades, Edna Clarke Hall (1879–1979) created hundreds of sketches, drawings, etchings and watercolours – many of which are now lost, hidden away in private homes or in the archives of national collections (Tate, the Ashmolean, Manchester Art Gallery and National Museums Wales).
This new edition of Wuthering Heights - which includes an introduction to a remarkable but forgotten female artist by art critic and scholar Dr Eliza Goodpasture - brings Clarke Hall’s evocative illustrations together with the novel for the very first time.
