Charlotte wore this dress to meet William Makepeace Thackeray in June 1850. The morning meeting took place at George Smith’s London house and only Charlotte, Thackeray and Smith were present. The gown is thought to have been made at home at the Parsonage. Eleanor Houghton has carried out a great deal of research on this dress and more information can be found here:
